3 Tips to Avoid Overusing Masking Plugs

Ensuring that plugs are serving their highest purpose means putting a system in place for sorting plugs. Too often, the same plugs are overused, while fresher plugs sit buried and unused at the bottom of the pile. The following are three common ways we see users sorting their masking plugs:

Marked Bins for Rotation

Create a pair of bins that you may keep on rotation at all times. Plugs from BIN ONE are used for masking the current project and BIN TWO is for throwing plugs into, after they’ve been used. Utilize plugs from BIN ONE until it is empty, then switch the way each bin is used – begin pulling plugs from BIN TWO for masking and discard used plugs into the empty BIN ONE. Paint plugs should wear evenly this way, and you can replace your entire plug inventory on a regular basis.

Color-Coding Plugs

Having the same sized masking plugs in a variety of colors can be beneficial, as you can rotate what color is presently being used to mask holes. Green masking plugs can be used for a set amount of time, followed by blue masking plugs, and then back to green. This ensures that the same paint plugs aren’t being used over and over again, while other paint plugs have barely been touched.

A Plug-Check Process

Put a system in place that requires your masking plugs are evaluated on a regular basis. Any plugs that show signs of being too worn should be discarded. This is also a great opportunity to take a quick inventory and order enough new masking plugs to replace the old.
